I would like to thank God for giving me the best doctors in UMMC. Last Oct. 29, 2011, I was confined in a different hospital when they found out that I need to have a heart surgery. One of the doctors, Dr. Nair, told me that they will move me to UMMC and not to be afraid because UMMC is the best hospital for my need.

I was moved to UMMC last Nov. 1, 2011. It was my first time to see staff and doctors who are really caring and kind to their patients. I don't have family here but I felt they were my family. I have undergone many tests and finally I had my schedule for my first surgery for my congenital heart disease.

Dr. Sunjay Kaushal did my surgery last Nov. 7, 2011. My cardiologist was Dr. Stacy Fisher. I am really grateful for the concern and care they showed to me. I was almost one month in the hospital. When I was discharged, Dr. Stacy Fisher continued to see me for my follow up check ups. I was doing okay from my first surgery but they encourage me to go for another open heart surgery because my right tricuspid valve needs repair and was leaking. Dr. Stacy Fisher arranged for me to meet Dr. Kaushal for me to be scheduled for another surgery. So, July 7, 2012 I had my second open heart surgery.

I thanked God for the wisdom He gave to Dr. Sunjay Kaushal because he told me that the patch that he put on my heart on my first surgery was already torn and at the same time he repaired my right tricuspid valve. Dr. Sunjay Kaushal and Dr. James Gammie both did their best to have my heart taken care of. Dr. Stacy Fisher recommended me to have a pacemaker. So, last July 23, 2012, I was discharged.

I am also thankful for Dr. Stacy Fisher for her untiring kindness, care and concern she is showing to me even during my follow up appointments. Thank you so much Dr. Sunjay Kaushal, Dr. James Gammie. I would like also to thank Dr. Stacy Fisher for your untiring care, kindness and concern for me. I wouldn't be able to repay all of you but God will bless you in many ways. Congratulations too for being the Top Doctors named in Baltimore Magazine. Thank you also to Dr. Stephen Shorofsky and Dr. Anastasios Saliaris for taking good care of my pacemaker. Now I am looking to go back to work if I can find a job.

This evening I learned of the passing of Dr. Duane Sewell in Nov. 2011. It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing.

Our son was admitted to UMMC in the summer of 2010. As all parents would be, my husband and I were worried and anxious. We knew our son was very sick, but uncertain as to what exactly was wrong.

Our admitting physician was Dr. Sewell. We knew immediately that our son was in good hands. Dr. Sewell was kind and compassionate, and we never doubted his concern and committment to making our son well. Within a week it was determined that our son would need surgery, and Dr. Sewell, along with Dr. Burrows, performed a lengthy surgery to remove extensive infection. I will never forget that Dr. Sewell took a moment to come out of the surgery to assure us that our son was doing ok. After a long recovery, our son is doing awesome. The reality is that he very well may not have survived.

My husband and I knew we were blessed that Dr. Sewell was among our son's doctors and that he was one of his surgeons. We saw Dr. Sewell every day during our son's hospitalization, and knew Dr. Sewell to be a caring and compassionate man.

His passing is a huge loss for the medical community, his patients and his family. He touched our family, and we will forever be grateful for the care he gave our son. The Sewell family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I was sent to UMMC on Feb. 14 - 20 for blood clots and infected PICC line. I have never been treated so well in a hospital in all my life. The doctors, nurses, techs, maintenance, food servers went out of their way to treat me and provided for me and my family. My whole family came up to see me, and everybody was so impressed. I would like to thank everybody at this hospital for all they did. If anybody in our family gets sick again, we will be back. Very professional. Thank you again.

In march 2011 I was fortunate enough to be helicoptered to shock trauma after I developed complications from an elective surgery at a different hospital. I had to endure numerous surgeries, a still very painful skin graph on my thigh, a colostomy bag, a few weeks on a ventilator, two months in the hospital, a month in Kernan rehabilitation center learning how to walk again a talk care of my basic needs, two weeks in a nursing home while I transitioned to home health care. All this was due to the fact that my small bowel developed a tear and cause feces to spill into my abdominal cavity causing massive infection. A large portion of my abdominal cavity had to be cut out too. The most difficult part of this ordeal was that i wasunable to eat for eight months . I was given nutrients intravenously. I also somehow developed hepatitis b probably due to all the blood transfusions I received during my numerous surgeries. Finally, in oct.2011 I had my small bowel repaired, I developed a hernia that was repaired, I also had my gall bladder and appendix removed and my abdominal wall had to undergo some reconstructive surgery due to tissue loss. My family was told at the first hospital I probably would die but I lived! By the grace of god, I had a truly wonderful dr with healing hands. I would like to thank dr scalea for saving my life. I am still recovering but I feel as if I will be able to resume a normal life at some point. I believe things happen to people for a reason. This ordeal just happened to me. God bless all who experience some sort of trauma. I now have more compassion for others that I see who are not well.
