This evening I learned of the passing of Dr. Duane Sewell in Nov. 2011. It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing.

Our son was admitted to UMMC in the summer of 2010. As all parents would be, my husband and I were worried and anxious. We knew our son was very sick, but uncertain as to what exactly was wrong.

Our admitting physician was Dr. Sewell. We knew immediately that our son was in good hands. Dr. Sewell was kind and compassionate, and we never doubted his concern and committment to making our son well. Within a week it was determined that our son would need surgery, and Dr. Sewell, along with Dr. Burrows, performed a lengthy surgery to remove extensive infection. I will never forget that Dr. Sewell took a moment to come out of the surgery to assure us that our son was doing ok. After a long recovery, our son is doing awesome. The reality is that he very well may not have survived.

My husband and I knew we were blessed that Dr. Sewell was among our son's doctors and that he was one of his surgeons. We saw Dr. Sewell every day during our son's hospitalization, and knew Dr. Sewell to be a caring and compassionate man.

His passing is a huge loss for the medical community, his patients and his family. He touched our family, and we will forever be grateful for the care he gave our son. The Sewell family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I was sent to UMMC on Feb. 14 - 20 for blood clots and infected PICC line. I have never been treated so well in a hospital in all my life. The doctors, nurses, techs, maintenance, food servers went out of their way to treat me and provided for me and my family. My whole family came up to see me, and everybody was so impressed. I would like to thank everybody at this hospital for all they did. If anybody in our family gets sick again, we will be back. Very professional. Thank you again.

In march 2011 I was fortunate enough to be helicoptered to shock trauma after I developed complications from an elective surgery at a different hospital. I had to endure numerous surgeries, a still very painful skin graph on my thigh, a colostomy bag, a few weeks on a ventilator, two months in the hospital, a month in Kernan rehabilitation center learning how to walk again a talk care of my basic needs, two weeks in a nursing home while I transitioned to home health care. All this was due to the fact that my small bowel developed a tear and cause feces to spill into my abdominal cavity causing massive infection. A large portion of my abdominal cavity had to be cut out too. The most difficult part of this ordeal was that i wasunable to eat for eight months . I was given nutrients intravenously. I also somehow developed hepatitis b probably due to all the blood transfusions I received during my numerous surgeries. Finally, in oct.2011 I had my small bowel repaired, I developed a hernia that was repaired, I also had my gall bladder and appendix removed and my abdominal wall had to undergo some reconstructive surgery due to tissue loss. My family was told at the first hospital I probably would die but I lived! By the grace of god, I had a truly wonderful dr with healing hands. I would like to thank dr scalea for saving my life. I am still recovering but I feel as if I will be able to resume a normal life at some point. I believe things happen to people for a reason. This ordeal just happened to me. God bless all who experience some sort of trauma. I now have more compassion for others that I see who are not well.

I'm so grateful to the doctors and nurses who took care of my mother when she had a brain aneurysm in November 2008. She was fine one day and wandering around the house in confusion the next day. She was transported from PG County Hospital as soon as it was learned that she has suffered brain trauma. The staff at UMMC were on the case immediately and stopped my mother's hemorrhaging brain. They discovered that she had three brain aneurysm in all and made arrangements to correct them all. I can talk about this staff all day and never do them justice. Today, my mom is doing well and getting stronger every day. Thank you UMMC for saving her life. Sincerely...Kim Jackson
